I was lucky enough to stay with my parents for a week. Their home is the antithesis of Las Vegas. It’s a pleasure to sit outside and hold the neighbor cat on your lap. ❤

The Darkness Dwells Podcast Interviews Me!

Jason White and Michael Schutz from The Darkness Dwells Podcast are such cool guys. They have their fingers on the pulse of horror, they’re knowledgable, and they’re also kind. They consistently run one of my favorite podcasts, and I’m so delighted that they invited me on to discuss Women in Horror Month.

Desert Companion: Mercedes M. Yardley’s “My Space”

The Desert Companion ran a piece on my writing space in their December issue.  Scott Dickensheets did a write-up of all of my various odds and ends while Brent Holmes threw himself on the floor to take some pictures of my teeny, tiny little area. My writing space is literally the corner of my bedroom. I found myself apologizing.

“I’m sorry it’s so little.”

“I don’t always write here. Sometimes it’s on the couch or I put my feet up on the kitchen table. Does this make me a liar?”

“This house is a shoebox. I want to laugh when you use the word ‘space’.”

But when all is said and done, it’s my happy little area and I love it. Each little item fills me with joy. It’s truly my personal corner of the world.

I hope you’ll check out My Space and enjoy, and also consider purchasing a copy of the charity copy Vegas Strong. I donated a story titled “His Girl Friday” and the proceeds all go to the Code Green Campaign, which is a first responder-oriented mental health advocacy and education organization. We’re still feeling the effects of the mass shooting in Vegas, and I don’t now if those effects will ever cease. This is a small way I, and you, can help. 🙂

Miss Murder Takes a Holiday

 

My husband gifted me with a night’s stay at the hotel a mile from our house. So I was close enough I could be accessible if the house burned down or the kiddo’s heads exploded, but I was otherwise off limits.

I wrote on the balcony. I laughed at 20 minutes of vintage South Park (Drugs are bad, m’kay) until I realized with horror that I was wasting time. I took a long, hot bubble bath, and then crawled into nice, clean sheets that I didn’t have to wash. It was such a wonderful, wonderful night.

I’ll Be Speaking at the LVWG on Thursday!

I love speaking at the Las Vegas Writers Group meetings. They’re a lot of fun and I actually met my writer’s group, the Illiterati, at the LVWG. Please join us on Thursday, January 19 at 7:00. We’ll be talking about critique groups. We’ll discuss the pros and cons, how to give and receive feedback, and answer any questions you may have. The LVWG is friendly to novice and veteran writers alike. Please join us! I’ll also be selling and signing books afterward. The popular Mercedes Murdock Yardley is returning this month to give us her take on joining and using critique groups. (Hint — she’s in favor of them.) Last time Mercedes presented her talk was very well received, and she has been invited back virtually by popular demand.

Here is Mercedes writing about herself:

Hi. I’m Mercedes. I have two broken laptops, three kids, a husband and no time to write, although I try my very best. I like to write stories. I like to write poems. I like to write essays and sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they aren’t. I’m the author of the short story collection Beautiful Sorrows, the “serial killers in love” novella  Apocalyptic Montessa and Nuclear Lulu: A Tale of Atomic Love, the BONE ANGEL trilogy, Pretty Little Dead Girls: A Novel of Murder and Whimsy, and the Bram Stoker Award winner Little Dead Red. I specialize in the dark and beautiful.

We meet in the non-smoking meeting room. Door opens at six, meeting starts at 7. Come early to order a bite to eat and network with fellow Las Vegas writers! New members at any stage of their writing career are always welcome!

I’m Guest Teaching at UNLV Today!

They had me last year and I’m delighted to be invited back. It’s very, very cool. I’m so inspired by these new students who have hope and so much unbridled enthusiasm in their eyes. I just want to suck it up, all Hannibal Lecter style. With a side of fava beans.
